The Phoenix Club

  • Alderton House 117 East 70th Street New York, NY, 10021 United States (map)

The Phoenix Club is a group of women with substantial life experience who meet monthly to find ways to use our time and skills to build new friendships and enrich the lives of those around us. We explore topics of cultural and practical interest, using our collective knowledge and experiences as well as the expertise of invited speakers.
In August we will hear “Tales from the Far Side” from fellow Phoenix member Jeanne Murray. During her many decades of elementary school teaching, Jeanne found that her students were full of surprises, and often, wisdom. She will share some unexpected lessons she herself learned from her young students in Harlem, the U. S. Virgin Islands, Bedford Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, and Uniondale, Long Island. For at least 40 of those years, Jeanne experienced additional unexpected lessons while she volunteered as a teacher and/or educational consultant at the Rosedale Center for Girls, which joined with the girls and their families to provide a nurturing academic and culturally enriching environment for elementary, middle and high schoolers in the Bronx.
We all have teaching experience of some kind, whether in a school setting or in the family or workplace, and we have all been students. Bring your own stories to share as we celebrate the last days of summertime.
